Prva mašina za pranje veša, lansirana u serijsku proizvodnju, kreirana je u 1907-u od strane Williama Blackstonea, imala je ručni pogon (postoji i mišljenje da je Nathaniel Briggs učinio prvu). U Evropi su prve mašine za pranje počele da se proizvode u Nemačkoj u 1900-u. Moderne, električno upravljane mašine pojavile su se u 1908-u. Mehanizacija rada praktično je dovela do nestanka profesije pranja.

A machine of an activator type is a washing machine with the presence of an activator – a rotating shaft with blades or a disk that provides mixing during washing.

Posebna karakteristika ovog tipa podloške je slabo pjenjenje, stoga su prahovi za pranje ruku također pogodni za upotrebu u strojevima aktivatorskog tipa.

The basis of the design of a washer of an activator type is a tank made of stainless steel or plastic. The upper part (for loading clothes) – removable or flip cover. At the bottom or in the lower part of one of the walls there is an activator – a plastic flat circle or a shaft with protrusions – blades. The axis of the activator comes out of the tank, driven by an electric motor.

The activator machines of the Soviet period, as a rule, had a vertical tank of aluminum or stainless steel with a capacity of up to 30 liters and dimensions up to about 400x400x600 (height) mm, with a bottom in the shape of a semicircle. An activator (most often made of bakelite) with a diameter of about 200 mm, driven through a belt drive by a capacitor electric motor located under the tank, was located on one of the flat walls along the axis of the semicircle of the bottom. The control included a mechanical time relay for 15 minutes (with a specified accuracy of 1 minute), automatically turning on the electric motor alternately in different directions through pauses. Also (on later models) the engine power could be separately regulated (2 or 3 “wash modes”).
